Have you received any e-mails that are supposedly from the IRS? There are a few different scams circulating right now. One such e-mail states that you are under investigation by the IRS criminal investigation unit. They ask you to click an attachment to get more information. DO NOT open the attachment! It is a virus that could allow someone to access your computer. Here is a link to the IRS website with their explanation: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=170894,00.html. Another one claims that you are eligible for a refund from the IRS. It asks you to click on a link to fill out information in order to receive your check. Again, DO NOT click on the link. This one is a “phishing” scam aimed at stealing your identity. Here is a link to the IRS website with their explanation on this and other e-mail and phone scams: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=178061,00.html.
One thing to always remember is that the Internal Revenue Service NEVER sends unsolicited e-mails. If the IRS contacts you, you should always receive a written notice via regular mail. They may also call you, but that should be accompanied by a letter or notice. If you are not sure if any tax related correspondence is real, please contact me as soon as possible and I can help you with it. If you are sure that a notice is fake, report it immediately to the IRS (www.irs.gov) or the state (www.ftb.ca.gov). They have an e-mail address that you can forward any suspicious e-mails to.
If you do receive an actual notice from the IRS or state in the mail, please contact me immediately so I can review the notice and advise you of the proper action to take. In some cases, we can eliminate or reduce the amount due, but you must respond to the notice in a timely manner.
